History

Cleversticks has been around for 35 years, it was invented in 1983.

Market research was carried out in the Midlands and a number of toyshops were selling pre-production samples by November 1983.

During this period, a London wholesaler Robenu noticed the market research and purchased samples. Within one week they informed us that Cleversticks was on sale in Harrods London, this was before the product had even been launched.

Samples also found their way to Nicolas Burdett in Nottingham and they carried out trials of the product.

Cleversticks was launched by the inventor A W Green T/A Tony Plastics at the Earls Court Toy Fair in February 1984.

The resulting orders from as far afield as America and Australia, require the urgent addition of a Telex number to the postal address and phone number.

Little did I know that the reprinting of all the company stationary, would document the history of modern comunications. The second reprint was to replace the Telex number with a Fax number, the email address tony@cleversticks.co.uk was soon added.

The next addition was the cleversticks.co.uk Web address. A recent addition was the domain name cleversticks.com.

In June 2018 the Cleversticks website was updated to detect and respond to mobile devices.

The original Cleversticks packs contained only 60 mm sticks and rings. These were suitable for young children and primary education.

In 1985, Cleversticks was licensed to Nicolas Burdett and Clever Shapes were added to the range.
The new components increased the age range and Cleversticks was now suitable for older children.

Nicolas Burdett became part of Nottingham Educational Supplies then NES Arnold.

After fighting off a hostile takeover bid by Robert Maxwell. NES Arnold become Findel Education and are now known as Findel PLC.

Technical sticks were developed and a license was granted to Polydron to manufacture and sell Cleversticks.

At one time Rosenhain, Lippmen and Peers also held a sub-license to manufacture and sell Cleversticks in Australia.

A W Green T/A Cleversticks have exclusively manufactured Cleversticks since 2003.

After extensive product development, the new range of Cleversticks has been introduced adding wheels with rubber tyres and structural components to meet the needs of all children over 3 years of age.
